Angie Ridgway was one of the best mentors I've ever had in my life. I still keep in touch with her, and it's just great because as a first-year teacher, I have so many questions. I know I can just go to her without a doubt.
Innovator. Motivator. Collaborator. Advocate for student needs. These are the skills we impart to Secondary and All-Grade Educators whose passion for teaching is transformative in children’s lives.

The role of teachers is transforming. Technology has brought information to learners’ fingertips.
Teachers are no longer the vessels of knowledge, but rather the facilitators of information. They must employ students’ experiences, languages and backgrounds to find their unique learning needs. UIndy meets the challenge of preparing impactful teachers with an innovative secondary education program.
We provide our graduates with a dual degree–both a content major and a major in secondary (and all-grade) education. It’s a unique program designed to bring you along a revolutionary developmental path that begins by learning more about yourself as a student. This leads to a better understanding of how others learn, and eventually a mastery of what it takes to be a transformative teacher.
As soon as you begin to explore the nature of how you learn, you gain valuable insight into how learning takes place in a variety of school settings. To give this perspective, our program provides instruction in learning theory, developmental literacy, technology, special education, innovative engagement practices, assessment and English language learning.
To bring this all together, we have designed an immersive program. That means the majority of courses, beginning in your first semester, are taught in the best place to learn about teaching adolescents: on site in a secondary school. It’s a linguistic and cultural experience that reveals concepts of education that can only truly be understood in the real world.
These curriculum guides outline the classes you'll need to take as an Secondary/All-Grade Education major. The general education curriculum guide lists your class options and requirements to fulfill UIndy's general education requirements, while the subject area curriculum guides list the classes needed to major in Secondary/All-Grade Education for that subject. You'll need to look at all guides to get a complete picture of what classes you'll take at UIndy.
