A Message from the Student Counseling Center: Supporting You Through Uncertain Times

Recent events and the ongoing uncertainties that accompany the societal changes and impacts we are seeing locally, nationally, and throughout the world can, understandably, create anxiety and perhaps deeper feelings of overwhelm and fear. These are common and normal reactions. Remember to prioritize your mental health as you process everything going on around you.

You are not alone in these feelings, and help is always available through many resources and people around you.

The UIndy Student Counseling Center is one of those resources – free and confidential. We are here to support you. We offer a safe space to talk about and manage your emotions with individual therapy, group and workshop options, or referrals and we can provide you with a variety of materials and resources to help you navigate this time of uncertainty.

You also have the support of our entire University of Indianapolis campus, and our SCC staff stand with our colleagues and coworkers in the commitment to maintain a safe and supportive environment for all students. You don’t have to face these challenges alone. Reach out, connect, & engage with us here in the SCC and with others. Help is always available.

Tips to help you manage your immediate reactions to the recent events

The UIndy campus community as a whole is impacted by recent events in our country. The tips below can help you manage your immediate reactions to the recent events.

  • Acknowledge Reactions. Allow yourself time to reflect on what you are feeling and how you may be reacting to any fears and uncertainties of the future. Help others to identify what they are feeling, and dialogue in ways that unite and transcend different worldviews.
  • Maintain your day-to-day normal activities and social outlets. It is important to attend to your daily priorities and needs and to find ways to participate in activities that provide balance in your life. It is okay to take time away from others to rejuvenate or reflect on how you are feeling but resist withdrawing and isolating yourself from the support and caring that others can provide.
  • Practice Self-Care. Get appropriate sleep, eat well, and drink water. Those are the basics. Add self-soothing strategies that promote wellness. These could include activities such as taking a walk, calling a friend or loved one, exercising, or listening to music. It could be anything that is personally soothing but the key is to do something other than ruminating or allowing anxiety to hinder you from living your life.
  • Limit Exposure to Social Media and News Reports. Temporarily block or avoid the volume of information and opinions distributed through social media, particularly if these venues are contributing to high distress.
  • Seek Understanding. Reflect on the importance of developing an inclusive and respectful community. Rather than adding to the divisiveness individuals may be experiencing, you can model a non-judgmental and accepting attitude that promotes a campus culture of unity, respect, and openness to differences in personal experiences and worldviews.
  • Seek Supports & Use Campus Resources. Reach out to friends and family and learn about the campus resources available. If you or someone you know has high distress that does not seem to be lessening, tall-: about it with others. Your campus community is here to help
