Definition of Military-Affiliated Students

A military-affiliated student is considered anyone who is actively serving in the United States armed forces (regular duty, reserve duty, or Indiana National Guard) or is honorably discharged (veteran) who has been accepted, or is a current student, at a postsecondary institution. The designation extends to family members (spouse or child) of an active duty service member or veteran.

How the GI Bill® helps you

GI Bill® Basics

The GI Bill® is a monthly benefit issued directly to the school or to the student, depending on which chapter of the GI Bill® for which you qualify. You can consult the Department of Veterans Affairs About the GI Bill® webpage to determine what chapter you fit into and how much you will receive.

You can find detailed information regarding VA educational benefits directly on their website, including the process for applying for VA educational benefits, determining eligibility for VA educational benefits, and what happens after you apply for VA educational benefits.

using your GI Bill® at uindy

After you have applied for VA educational benefits with the VA, the general process for using your VA benefits at UIndy will follow the outline of:

  1. Email veterans@uindy.edu from your official UIndy email address and let us know what type of VA educational benefits you would like to use at UIndy.
  2. Receive an email response from our VA Enrollment Coordinator requesting certain information or documentation necessary to claim your VA educational benefits at UIndy.
  3. Send the requested document, forms, and/or information back to the VA Enrollment Coordinator.
  4. The VA Enrollment Coordinator will create your VA profile at UIndy and certify your enrollment. If your request to use VA benefits is received before the beginning of the semester, this will be done by the first day of classes or within 30 days after submitting your request, whichever is first. If your request is received after the beginning of classes, then your enrollment will be certified within 7 days of submitting your request. These timelines are dependent on you having sent all required documents, forms, and information to the VA Enrollment Coordinator. If you believe you have provided all required information and your enrollment has not been certified within this timeline, please email us at veterans@uindy.edu for assistance.
  5. Manage the recurring requirements to certify your attendance with the VA. This includes completing UIndy Request for VA Benefits Enrollment Certification form each semester and may include monthly attendance self-verifications with the VA. More information on these requirements can be found below.

For more information on how to use your VA educational benefits at the University of Indianapolis, whether as a veteran or as a dependent of a veteran, please find the section below for your specific VA benefit type.

Chapter 33 is one of the VA educational benefit types where your payments for tuition and fees from the VA will be sent directly to the University of Indianapolis. Depending on your specific benefit eligibility and time status (e.g., full time, half time, etc.) you may also receive payments from the VA for books and supplies and/or a monthly housing stipend. The general process for using your Chapter 33 benefits at UIndy is as follows:

  1. The first semester you wish to use your Chapter 33 benefits at UIndy, you will need to email veterans@uindy.edu, provide your Certificate of Eligibility (COE), and complete the UIndy Request for VA Benefits Enrollment Certification form. For recurring semesters, you will only need to complete the UIndy Request for VA Benefits Enrollment Certification form.
  2. Once your request is received, the VA Enrollment Coordinator will certify your credit hour enrollment with the VA according to the timeline listed under Using Your GI Bill® at UIndy. You should begin to receive your monthly stipend (if applicable) according to the VA payment schedule after this initial enrollment.
  3. If you are 100% eligible for Chapter 33 benefits, then the Office of Student Billing and Payment will flag your account to prevent you from being dropped for nonpayment or having a hold applied to your account.
  4. After the drop/add deadline passes, the Registrar's Office and Office of Financial Aid will work together to certify your eligible tuition and fees with the VA. Your tuition and fees will be reported to the VA no later than 30 days after the first day of classes.
  5. After your tuition and fees are reported, it may take 8-12 weeks for the VA to send payment for your tuition and fees to UIndy. During this time, your student bill will show as having a balance, but should be flagged to prevent any holds or other negative action. If you have any problems with your student bill while using Chapter 33 benefits, email veterans@uindy.edu with the subject line "CH 33 Student Billing Issue for [student ID number]" where you provide your student ID number in the suggested space.
  6. You will need to complete the monthly attendance self-verification with the VA.

YOU MUST REQUEST AN ENROLLMENT CERTIFICATION EVERY SEMESTER

Classes are not certified automatically, so you must certify your classes through the VA Enrollment Coordinator in the Registrar's Office each semester that you want to use VA Benefits, including the GI Bill®. If you have used VA benefits at UIndy in a prior semester, you will receive an email with a link to the online Request to Use VA Benefits form once it becomes available for the semester. If you do not receive this email at least 60 days before the beginning of the term or have not used VA Benefits at UIndy in a prior term, please email veterans@uindy.edu to receive access to this form. Benefits are not available for courses you've already passed.

MONTHLY ATTENDANCE SELF-VERIFICATION

If you receive benefits under Chapter 30, 33, 35, or 1606, you must also submit a monthly attendance verification directly with the VA. You can do this using the VA’s online self-verification tools, by text, by email, by phone, or online through Ask VA. You must complete this the last day of each month you are enrolled in order to receive your check or direct deposit. Please note this means students receiving VA educational benefits under these chapters must certify their enrollment two different ways: once a semester through UIndy's VA Enrollment Coordinator and monthly directly with the VA.

If you’ve previously set up direct deposit with the VA, you should receive your monthly benefits 3-5 business days after you finish your attendance self-verification. If you completed your self-verification and have not received your expected direct deposit after 7 days, please email us at veterans@uindy.edu so that we can help you investigate what may be preventing the processing of your benefits.

Called to Active Duty

Any student called to active military duty should email a copy of their military service orders to veterans@uindy.edu. After providing a copy of your military service orders, the VA Enrollment Coordinator at UIndy will help you pursue one of the following options:

  • Withdraw from all courses and receive a refund.

  • With the permission of each instructor, receive either a final grade or incomplete grade to finish the course either during or after your active duty (depending on the specific circumstances of your active duty and the agreement with the instructor).

Such requests and documentation must be presented by the student from their official UIndy email address. Refunds of fees will not be made if the student receives a grade and credit for the course, and all refunds will be adjusted as required by financial aid regulations.
