Spring Term

About Spring Term

Spring Term offers students an opportunity to participate in a course that is creative, innovative, and interdisciplinary. Spring Term courses are characterized by subject matter and learning experiences not available during the regular semesters. Courses feature interesting and unusual topics, non-traditional activities, field trips, and/or travel. With the exception of a select few courses, Spring Term courses cannot be used to fulfill other degree requirements except study abroad and modern language major or minor requirements. Spring Term courses are worth 3 credit hours.

Spring Term Requirement

Participation in one Spring Term course is required for undergraduate students following the former General Education Core (effective Semester I, 2013-2014 through Semester II, 2022-2023) who are enrolled as full-time Day Division students for two consecutive semesters in an academic year during their college careers. Full-time undergraduate Day Division students who are following the new General Education Core (effective Semester I, 2023-2024 and beyond) are not required to enroll in a Spring Term course, however, enrollment is highly encouraged due to the interdisciplinary and experiential opportunities not typically available in the courses offered during a standard semester.

Tuition

If you have been enrolled full-time (day division) during Semester I and II of the current academic year, have no unpaid balance with the University, and have never taken a Spring Term course, you pay no tuition. If you have been enrolled part-time during the current academic year or have already taken a Spring Term course, you will be assessed tuition charges for the 3 credit hour course. Please contact the Office of Student Billing and Payment for current pricing. Travel courses do not require tuition payment, even if you’ve already completed a Spring Term course. Students in travel courses only pay the fees associated with the trip.

Fees

Fees vary by course. Read the course descriptions in the schedule carefully. Some courses also require supplies or other materials.

Housing

If you lived in a residence hall during Semester I and II, you may continue living in the residence hall while enrolled in a Spring Term course.

There is no additional cost for living in the residence hall unless you have already taken a Spring Term course. Please reach out to the Office of Student Billing and Payment for rates.

Students enrolled in travel courses will be charged for room and board if they are not eligible for free housing but plan to stay on campus during Spring Term.

100% Refund Deadline

When: Wednesday of the first week of Spring Term (by 4:30 PM ET) is the last day to drop a Spring Term course and receive 100% tuition refund (if applicable). Courses dropped after this date will appear as a W (withdrawal) on a student’s transcript. No refunds are processed for a withdrawal.

How: Students can drop a course through the online registration system, in person at the Registrar’s Office, or with their academic advisor.

Withdrawing from Spring Term

When: Monday of the second week of Spring Term (by 4:30 PM ET) is the last day to withdraw from a Spring Term class with a grade of W.*

How: Complete a drop/add form and turn it in at the Registrar’s Office or to your academic advisor.

NOTE: If you withdraw from a Spring Term course, you will be asked to vacate the residence hall at the time of withdrawal. If you withdraw from a Spring Term on-campus course, you will be charged tuition the next time you enroll in a Spring Term on-campus course.

* If you are enrolled in a Spring Term course, fail to withdraw by the deadline, and discontinue attendance, you will receive a failing grade for the course. It is your responsibility, not the instructor’s, to withdraw from a course.
