This course has didactic, lab, and clinical components. The focus of this course is on assessment, diagnosis, and collaborative management of adult and geriatric clients experiencing acute and exacerbations of chronic illnesses commonly seen in acute care delivery settings/systems. Students will develop knowledge and skills fundamental to promoting health maintenance and disease prevention through didactic, laboratory experiences and clinical practice. The course also enables students to synthesize knowledge of physiological, psychological, and socio-cultural factors in the assessment and management of health problems of individuals in acute care settings. Emphasis is placed on common chronic and acute conditions relevant to acute care.
The impact of illness on the client’s quality of life is included. There is an emphasis on illness prevention, health promotion, maintenance, and restoration. Included in each unit of study are definitions, etiology, clinical features, laboratory studies, differential diagnoses, complications and treatment-including pharmacological agents. Attention is given to the integration and application of advanced health assessment and critical-thinking skills and strategies in the diagnostic and clinical management processes of the adult/gero acute care nurse practitioner role. Client education, community resources and follow-up procedures are also integrated throughout each unit. Application of evidence-based findings and clinical reasoning skills are required.

This course contains both didactic and clinical components. The course content is focused on primary care management of the older adult who is experiencing selected health concerns. A variety of healthcare and community settings will be utilized for clinical experiences. Students will employ multiple healthcare delivery models that facilitate the older adult’s quality of life and functional status. A comprehensive approach to care management for the older adult that includes both physiological and pharmacological components will provide the foundations for didactic content and clinical learning. Emphasis is placed on the application of foundational principles of health care including pharmacological management for older adults across the continuum of care.
