Scholarships & Awards in the School of Education
UIndy's School of Education recognizes outstanding students each year through the scholarships and awards listed below. Scholarships are financial need-based, merit-based, or both. Recipients' names also are displayed on permanent plaques in the School.
The scholarships/awards and the years they are awarded are described below.
Esta B. & Clifford McKee Scholarship
Preference to an Elementary Education major; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Georgia Benson Blackwell Education Scholarship
Preference to education students from a Johnson County high school; application process included; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Gregg Baud Goal Achievers Award
The Gregg Baud Goal Achievers Award was established by Dr. Ed Wall to honor individuals who have faced serious challenges to become a teacher, demonstrating both persistence and dedication. Recipients are selected by the School of Education and receive a monetary award.

Helen E. Rusk Scholarship
Preference to freshmen from St. Joseph County majoring in elementary education; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Jack L. Clark Endowed Scholarship
Preference to students majoring in education and from Indiana. Candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Jeanne Wade Watkins Endowed Scholarship
Preference to an elementary education major who graduated from Roncalli High School or an Indianapolis southside high school; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Kermit R. Todd Scholarship
For an Elementary Education major with unmet financial need, leadership skills, extracurricular activities; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Preference to education students from Putnam County; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Paul L. Bailey Scholarship Fund
Education major; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Phillip E. & Carolyn I. White Endowed Scholarship
Preference to education students from Fountain Central, North Vermillion and Seeger High Schools; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

UIndy Diversity in Education Teaching Scholarship
The School of Education is committed to preparing the teacher workforce to better represent a rapidly changing K-12 student population. New UIndy Education majors meeting the criteria are eligible for the scholarship. Recognizing the need for minority populations in the classroom, students from underrepresented populations are encouraged to apply.
Delbert & Virginia Stevens Educational Scholarships
The Delbert and Virginia Stevens Educational Scholarships are awarded to Elementary or Secondary Math Education sophomores who excel in scholarship, leadership, and service. Candidates who maintain the criteria can be awarded in their junior year as well. Candidates must demonstrate financial need as determined by the UIndy Financial Aid Office. Selection of the award winners is made by the Stevens Scholarship Committee.

Lloyd & Treva Hiatt Elementary Education Scholarship
Elementary education majors; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Arthur B. Cook Award
The Arthur B. Cook Award honors the husband of Dr. Pat Cook, faculty emeritus in the School of Education. Mr. Cook was a baseball player, English teacher and avid sportsman. In celebration of his life, this award with a cash stipend is given to a secondary education junior who is a student athlete. Selection is made by the Secondary Education Committee and may not overlap with other junior scholarships from the department.

Davis Merkel, Rayburn & Todd Scholarship
The Davis Rayburn Todd Merkel Scholarship was created by four former UIndy education professors. It is awarded to an Elementary Education junior who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and service. Candidates must demonstrate financial need as determined by the UIndy Financial Aid Office. Selection is made by the Elementary Education Committee and may not overlap with other junior scholarships from the department.

Future Colleague Award
The Future Colleague Award was created by Mrs. Susan Bryant, principal of Liberty Early Elementary School in Decatur Township, to provide monetary support for student teaching materials to an elementary education candidate. The Elementary Education committee selects an outstanding junior who has not received another scholarship and exhibits scholarship, service and collaboration.

Herbert W. & Marjorie Anson Smith Endowed Scholarship
Student must be a graduate of a Perry Township (Marion County) high school pursuing an Education major. Must have reached junior or senior year with a "B" average; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Helen York Brown Endowed Scholarship
Preference to nontraditional and/or upperclass students majoring in Education; candidates must demonstrate financial need and will be automatically considered by submitting the FAFSA.

Lester and Lucy (Carmony) Iron Award
The Lester and Lucy (Carmony) Iron Award was created by Dr. Jane Robertson, former coordinator of the secondary program. This scholarship honors Dr. Robertson’s parents and is given to a Secondary Education junior who exemplifies academic excellence, leadership and service. Selection is made by the Secondary Education Committee and may not overlap with other junior scholarships from the department.

Lettie P. Trefz Scholarship
The Lettie P. Trefz Scholarship is given by the Woman's Department Club of Indianapolis to one of three junior female applicants nominated by the Elementary Education Committee. The scholarship honors Lettie Trefz, who was an Indianapolis educator for over fifty years. Nominees should excel on scholarship, leadership and service, and must agree to attend and speak at the organization’s annual awards luncheon in May.

Outstanding Future Early Childhood Educator Award
The Outstanding Future Early Childhood Award is given to a senior who has shown excellence in both coursework and student teaching working with pre-kindergarten, Kindergarten, and/or first grade students. The award-winner is selected by the Elementary Education Team. It will be given when there is a candidate who demonstrates talent working with this age group.
Outstanding Elementary Future Educator
The Outstanding Future Educator Award is sponsored by the Indiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Educators (IACTE) and recognizes the top future educator in each of the following programs: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Masters of Arts in Teaching and Woodrow Wilson Fellows. Recipients are student teachers who have demonstrated excellence in their courses and fieldwork and are selected by committees from their respective programs. In addition to being recognized by the School of Education, these award winners are honored at the IACTE spring luncheon and program.
Outstanding Future Reading Teacher
The Outstanding Future Reading Teacher Award is sponsored by the Indiana Reading Professors (IRP) and recognizes one graduate from each college who demonstrates excellence in literacy coursework, field experiences and professional involvement. The UIndy IRP members select the top candidate seeking the “Teacher of Reading“ license. This recipient is honored at the Indiana State Reading Association’s annual conference and receives a year’s renewed membership to the International Reading Association.
Outstanding Secondary Future Educator
The Outstanding Future Educator Award is sponsored by the Indiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Educators (IACTE) and recognizes the top future educator in each of the following programs: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Masters of Arts in Teaching, and Woodrow Wilson Fellows. Recipients are student teachers who have demonstrated excellence in their courses and fieldwork and are selected by committees from their respective programs. In addition to being recognized by the School of Education, these award winners are honored at the IACTE spring luncheon and program.

Outstanding Special Education Future Educator
The Outstanding Student Teacher in Special Education was established in 2009 to honor the outstanding student teacher in special education. The recipient of this award meets the following criteria: (1) demonstrated outstanding knowledge, skill and sensitivity in teaching students with exceptional needs, (2) went above and beyond what is expected of a student teacher, (3) served as a role model and inspiration to his/her students, family members, and colleagues, and (4) demonstrated creativity in meeting the unique learning needs of students. The award winner receives $100 and a year’s membership to the Council for Exceptional Children.
Outstanding Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) Future Educator
The Outstanding Future Educator Award is sponsored by the Indiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Educators (IACTE) and recognizes the top future educator in each of the following programs: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Masters of Arts in Teaching, and Woodrow Wilson Fellows. Recipients are student teachers who have demonstrated excellence in their courses and fieldwork and are selected by committees from their respective programs. In addition to being recognized by the School of Education, these award winners are honored at the IACTE spring luncheon and program.
Outstanding Woodrow Wilson Indiana Teaching Fellowship Program (WWITFP) Future Educator
The Outstanding Future Educator Award is sponsored by the Indiana Association of Colleges of Teacher Educators (IACTE) and recognizes the top future educator in each of the following programs: Elementary Education, Secondary Education, Masters of Arts in Teaching, and Woodrow Wilson Fellows. Recipients are student teachers who have demonstrated excellence in their courses and fieldwork and are selected by committees from their respective programs. In addition to being recognized by the School of Education, these award winners are honored at the IACTE spring luncheon and program.
T.E.A.C.H. Scholarship
The T.E.A.C.H. Early Childhood Indiana Scholarship is a full-tuition scholarship available to students who are:
- Indiana residents;
- Working at least 30-hours per week in a licensed, registered, or certified early childhood (Pre-K) program setting;
- Making $20 or less as a teacher, teacher assistant, home visitor, or director/administrator/owner; and
- Are willing to commit to stay in the field of Early Childhood Education.
