Checklist for Studying Abroad

  • Make an appointment with Study Abroad by calling 317-788-3247, e-mailing studyabroad@uindy.edu, or stopping by Esch 233.
  • Research available study abroad programs. Write down all questions that you come up with about the program you want to attend.
  • Review program information and questions with Study Abroad. Once you select a program, complete necessary applications. (University of Indianapolis has an additional Study Abroad Fee - please keep in mind when looking at program costs)
  • Obtain Study Abroad budget from Study Abroad. Meet with Financial Aid Advisor (Laura Przybylinski) in the Office of Financial Aid to find out if you are eligible for financial aid.
  • Contact your Key Academic Advisor and obtain a list of courses you still need to complete your UIndy degree. Access and complete the Course Equivalency Form (via My UIndy). Keep one copy for yourself, take one to your Academic Advisor, and return one to Study Abroad. Also, go over what courses you will be taking when you get back and have them written down to take with you (you will have to email them to your advisor/Julie Kiefer/the Registrar's Office when the dates come up for registration - this will happen while you are abroad).
  • If living on campus, get in contact with Residence Life to inform them of your plans.
  • Obtain or renew your passport (Can be done at your local post office - pictures can be taken for a lesser expense at Walgreens or CVS).
  • Look into visa requirements for the country you are going. Discuss this with Study Abroad before leaving.
  • Check with your current health insurance provider regarding overseas coverage and limitations.
  • Purchase study abroad health insurance if coverage is not provided by current health insurance or study abroad program.

*Insurance - All students are required to have insurance coverage while studying abroad. Please speak with the Study Abroad Advisor for more information and details.

  • "U.S. citizens are strongly encouraged to maintain a high level of vigilance, be aware of local events, and take the appropriate steps to bolster their personal security. For additional information, please refer to "A Safe Trip Abroad" found at travel.state.gov taken from Public Announcements on State.gov.
  • Get vaccinations/exams (if necessary) from you health care provider.
  • Purchase airline tickets.
  • Bring invoice (bill from program) to Study Abroad to go over together before acting. (We highly recommend that you do not pay anything until you have discussed with Study Abroad first.)
