PTA Eligibility, Application & Matriculation

  • Students must be admitted to the University of Indianapolis prior to consideration for admission to the PTA program. (Current UIndy students have already completed this requirement.)
  • Cumulative grade point average:
    • College GPA 2.6 or above (students with a minimum of 12 college credits completed)
    • Cumulative high school GPA of 3.0 or above (for recent high school graduates or those with fewer than 12 college credits completed)
  • English and math proficiency through ENGL 100 and MATH 105 (by coursework or testing at UIndy)
  • Applicants for whom English is a second language must score a 61 on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) internet-based test.
  • Admission Requirements for International Undergraduate Students
  • The PTA application process is initiated differently depending on your current status with the University of Indianapolis.
    • If you have not applied to the University of Indianapolis then:
      • Apply to the University of Indianapolis as an undergraduate student and be admitted for the pre-PTA major  in order to be considered for admissions to the PTA program. Provide all transcripts at the time of application.
      • After admission to the university, apply to the PTA program. The PTA application link will be sent to pre-PTA admits.
    • If you are a current or have been a University of Indianapolis student, apply using the PTA Application.
  • Submit two letters of recommendation on the application:
    • All applicants are required to provide two recommendations. One must be from either a physical therapist or physical therapist assistant and the second can be from a work supervisor, professor/teacher, or health professional who can attest to the applicant's character and ability to commit to the Physical Therapist Assistant program.
    • Recommendations are not accepted from family or friends.
  • Submit a one-page personal statement on the application explaining your interest in the physical therapist assistant program.
  • To ensure students have a good understanding about the role of a Physical Therapist Assistant, UIndy requires 30 hours of observation. Include details of your observation hours on your application.
  • After the application deadline, top-ranked applicants will be invited for an interview based on pre-interview PTA admissions scoring criteria.
    • UIndy students will be guaranteed an interview if they have a prerequisite GPA of 3.0 or higher
    • Interviews are conducted in person at UIndy. Remote video-conference technology can be pre-arranged for applicants with health or travel restrictions.
    • Each interview is scheduled for 20 minutes with a team of two interviewers, one of whom will be a KSPT faculty member. Other interviewers may be alumni or clinical partners.
  • Interviewed applicants will have additional opportunities to learn about our program, such as:
    • Overview of the PTA program by the Program Director
    • Financial Aid Session with a staff member from the UIndy Financial Aid Office
    • Questions and answers from the UIndy Admissions Office
    • Student Panel
    • Meet and greet with faculty and students
    • Health Pavilion tour
  • Tuition Deposit: To be eligible to register for fall courses, you must pay your $100 tuition deposit. This is waived for returning UIndy students. Failure to deposit by May 1 may result in forfeiture of your seat in the PTA Program.
  • UIndy Email Account Set Up: Set up your UIndy email account at accounts.uindy.edu. Once you have set up your account, email Franci Dilk (dilkf@uindy.edu) from your UIndy account to let her know you have access to your UIndy email.
  • Official Transcript: An official transcript must be submitted to the PTA Admissions Counselor by June 1 (July 1 for incoming freshman, i.e., high school seniors)
  • Financial Aid: Students intending to apply for Financial Aid should visit the UIndy Financial Aid website for more information.
  • Essential Functions: Becoming a physical therapist assistant requires the completion of a professional education program that is both intellectually and physically challenging. The purpose of the PTA Essential Functions Policy is to articulate the demands of the program in a way that will allow prospective and current students to compare their own capabilities against these demands. All students must meet the essential function of the PTA program to begin and to continue in the program. When completing the PTA application, students acknowledge that they have read and meet the requirements. Additionally, during orientation, all students will sign a statement confirming they are able to meet the essential functions.
  • Computer Requirements: Students entering the PTA program at University of Indianapolis are required to bring a laptop for use in class. PC or Mac systems are acceptable. Laptops will be used for various in-class and out-of-class activities. The programs utilize computer-based testing through ExamSoft in the Examplify system. All laptops must meet the Examplify minimum requirements. Please review these requirements carefully prior to entering the program to verify your device will meet all of the requirements.
  • Required Health Documentation: Students in the Krannert School of Physical Therapy must comply with all health requirements. Health documentation must be uploaded to Viewpoint Health Portal by July 15.

Health requirements are tracked throughout the program to ensure students remain in compliance with program and clinical requirements. Proof of immunity and/or vaccinations are required. Additionally, students are required to have a physical exam completed by a primary health provider, as well as proof of health insurance (Medishare policies are not acceptable) prior to matriculation. Please note: Medishare and other cost-sharing programs are not health insurance and will not fulfill the requirements of the program or our clinical education contracts.
  • CPR Certification: Upload proof of CPR certification to the Viewpoint Health Portal by July 15. If a wallet card is uploaded, the copy must include the front and the back of the card, and the card must be signed.

Students must take an in-person BLS for healthcare providers CPR and AED course from the providers listed below. No other courses or providers are accepted. The course must have an in-person component and must include CPR and AED training for adults, children, and infants. A hybrid course is acceptable with online instruction followed by in-person skill demonstration. If you already have BLS for healthcare providers certification through the American Heart Association or Red Cross, we will accept it. Students are required to stay certified throughout the program.
  • Criminal Background Check and Drug Screen: In order to meet professional licensure requirements, as well as protect future patients/clients and clinical sites, admitted students are required to have criminal background checks and drug screens prior to matriculation into the program and by July 15. A criminal history or positive drug screen may affect clinical placement and/or licensure and, in some cases, disqualify a student from admission.

Academic Bankruptcy

Students entering college sometimes perform at an unacceptable academic level. Some individuals with this experience re-evaluate their educational goals and desire to return to college. Their academic record, however, may present an insurmountable obstacle. Applicants to the Physical Therapist Assistant program in this category who want the opportunity to have a fresh start may apply for admission with the request that their prior academic record be disregarded using the Academic Bankruptcy Policy.

An applicant may request academic bankruptcy upon meeting these conditions:

  1. The applicant must complete and submit the Academic Bankruptcy Petition to CHS Admissions, chsadmissions@uindy.edu. Submit by January 31st to qualify for the priority deadline.
  2. At least 3 years must have passed since the end of the semester(s) for which the applicant is requesting bankruptcy.
  3. Within the last 3 years, the applicant must have completed–at any regionally accredited institution of higher education–at least 12 credits of the support courses required for the PTA program with a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Please note:

  • No course credits earned in the semester(s) for which bankruptcy is given will be considered in the application process or for transfer credit.
  • Academic bankruptcy has no bearing on the financial obligations associated with the courses approved for the academic bankruptcy.
