Behavioral Health Trauma Certificate

Advance your career with expertise in psychological trauma.

The Behavioral Health Trauma Certificate prepares professionals and students to be trauma counseling specialists when coupled with a license-eligible graduate degree in behavioral health (e.g., social work, psychology, counseling, or marriage and family therapy).

Advantages

The certificate includes training dealing with complex trauma, trauma in children, racial trauma, and methods for supporting marginalized communities and groups. It may be pursued as a stand-alone certificate or as part of a graduate degree in social work, psychology, or counseling.

Curriculum


  • MHC 584 Trauma Counseling (Winter) - 3 credit hours
  • GPSY 537 Resilience and Growth in Marginalized Communities (Summer) - 3 credit hours
  • SOWK 562 Adverse Childhood Experiences and Trauma (Fall) - 3 credit hours

Total: 9 credit hours

Behavioral Health Trauma Certificate Faculty

Coursework developed and taught by expert faculty in the areas of counseling, psychology, and social work with clinical experience and/or research in trauma.

Admission Requirements & Application

 

Admission Requirements

A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of one master’s level course in professional counseling, psychotherapy, or clinical social work skills. At the University of Indianapolis, GPSY 541 Foundation Skills for Psychotherapy, MHC 541 Counseling Theory and Helping Relationships, and SOWK 515 Micro/Mezzo Practice would meet this requirement.

Application Process Information

Admission requirements (for applicants who are not currently enrolled in a UIndy graduate program):

  • Complete the online application
  • Application fee is waived if you apply by December 5
  • Transcripts from all colleges/universities attended
  • A brief statement of purpose explaining why you are interested in the certificate
  • Evidence of enrollment in one graduate-level counseling, psychotherapy, or social work skills course. Course must be completed prior to enrollment in the certificate program.

Tuition & Financial Aid

 

Tuition

The cost of the program for new incoming students is $598 per credit hour ($5,382 for 9 credit hours). A limited number of scholarships are available for qualified candidates during the 2026 calendar year. A separate scholarship application process is required.
