Cultural Horizons: An Immersive Journey Through China – Fostering Global Understanding
During Spring Break of 2025, the University of Indianapolis offered a unique and enriching opportunity for students to participate in Cultural Horizons: An Immersive Exchange in China program. Led by Dr. Kristine Newton of the English Department, this seven-day program provided a deep dive into the Chinese language, the traditional culture of Huzhou, Zhejiang Province, and the vibrant cities of Shanghai and Hangzhou. This program was made possible through a partnership with Huzhou Vocational and Technical College (HZVTC). Hosted by HZVTC, this immersive experience offered UIndy students an unforgettable glimpse into a fascinating part of the world and strongly aligns with the University's commitment to cultural engagement, thus fostering a deeper understanding of our own cultural identities as individuals as well as an academic community.
The Cultural Horizons program provides students firsthand experience of a different culture, encouraging them to reflect on their own perspectives and broaden their understanding of the world. The enthusiastic participation of our students and the warm reception they received in Huzhou, including media interviews and an invitation to other universities in Huzhou, further highlight UIndy's growing global presence.
Experiencing the Heart of Chinese Culture
The Cultural Horizons program was designed to provide a hands-on introduction to various facets of Chinese tradition. During their week in China, students engaged in a variety of activities, including:
- Language Immersion: Basic Mandarin lessons provided a foundation for communication.
- Artistic Traditions: Students explored the beauty of Chinese calligraphy, the delicate artistry of tea ceremonies, the intricate craft of pottery making, and the elegance of silk painting.
- Movement and Performance: Participants were introduced to the graceful movements of Tai Chi and other martial arts, as well as the vibrant and symbolic Chinese lion dance.
- Cultural Exploration: The group embarked on tours and shopping excursions in the ancient town of Nanxun, the scenic city of Hangzhou, and the bustling metropolis of Shanghai, gaining firsthand experience of China's diverse landscapes and urban life.
- Culinary Delights: Students had the opportunity to taste authentic Chinese cuisine, including a traditional hotpot meal.
- Entertainment: An evening of Asian-style karaoke offered a fun and engaging cultural experience.
This program went beyond mere observation, emphasizing active participation and cultural exchange. This immersive approach not only fostered a deeper understanding and appreciation for China but also empowered students to become more active and responsible members of the global community – a key learning outcome of the trip.
