Curriculum Guide for the graduate certificate in aging studies program

 

Program Total Credit Hours: 18

  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Refer to UIndy’s online course search to determine when/if courses are offered. All course offerings are subject to change based on enrollment and other factors.

Required Courses

  • Students pursuing only the Graduate Certificate in Aging Studies must complete 15 credit hours of Required courses. Students in a dual program may have different requirements and should consult with their Academic Advisor.
  • All Required courses are 3 credit hours.
  • HSCI 536 is a course housed in the Doctor of Health Science program with the prefix HSCI.

Fall Semesters: 

  • GERO 501 - Interdisciplinary Perspectives on Aging
  • GERO 505 - Physical Dimensions of Aging

Winter SemesterS:

  • GERO 520 - Psychology of Aging

Summer Semester: 3 Credit Hours

  • GERO 510 - Aging Individual in Society & Community
  • HSCI 536 - Foundations in Applied Research 

elective courses

  • Students pursuing only the Graduate Certificate in Aging Studies must complete 3 credit hours of Elective courses. Students in a dual program may have different requirements and should consult with their Academic Advisor.
  • GERO 590 - Practicum (variable 1.5-6.0 credit hours) and GERO 599 - Independent Study (variable 1.5-6.0 credit hours) are possible electives arranged individually with permission of the Aging Studies Program Director.
  • Additional Elective courses, including those in the Master of Science in Aging Studies Concentration Tracks, may be available outside the AGST program with approval. Students should consult their Academic Advisor for more information. 

The selected Elective courses listed below are 1.5 credit hours and alternate every other year. Scheduling is based on calendar years that end in odd or even numbers.

  • GERO 530 - Alzheimer’s & Dementia
  • GERO 556 - Legal & Ethical Aspects of Aging 

Fall Semesters of Calendar Years Ending in Even Numbers:

  • GERO 535 - End of Life Issues
  • GERO 560 - Economics & Aging Populations

Winter Semesters of Calendar Years Ending in Even Numbers:

  • GERO 579 - Long-Term Care Issues & Options

Summer Semesters of Calendar Years Ending in Even Numbers:

  • GERO 525 - Elder Abuse: Issues & Advocacy

Practicum Courses

  • The GERO 590 - Practicum course is offered as a variable 1.5-6.0 credit-hour, on-site, supervised experience and is counted as an Elective course. Students should consult their Academic Advisor for more information.
    • Students who do not have previous experience working or volunteering with the older adult population should register for 3 credit hours of GERO 590.
    • Students who have previous experience should register for 3 credits of Elective courses instead of GERO 590.
    • Students in a dual program will fulfill GERO 590 by successfully completing their fieldwork placement, serving a population that has at least half of the people over 50 years old.
