Mental health matters.The University of Indianapolis Department of Counseling, part of the Phylis Lan Lin School of Social Work & Counseling inside the College of Education & Behavioral Sciences, prepares future clinicians to address the needs of a diverse society, ethically and thoughtfully, as they become effective mental health counselors.
Mental Health Counseling Program Mission Statement
Preparing future clinicians to address the needs of individuals, groups, and communities through culturally informed, social justice-oriented, ethical, reflective, and effective practice of mental health counseling.
Program Goals
- Develop professional identities as clinical mental health counselors and/or art therapists.
- Model cultural humility, appreciation for diversity, and social-justice orientation.
- Demonstrate adherence to the high ethical and legal standards of the profession.
- Utilize counseling theory and current research to inform practice in the areas of mental health treatment, prevention, program development, and enhancement of human potential.
- Apply contemporary information from the fields of developmental psychology, neuropsychology, addictions, and career counseling to the practice of mental health counseling and/or art therapy.
- Prepare for future practice in the community through high-quality, supervised experiences.
