Whether you aspire to play an instrument (or sing!), you’re in your tenth year of lessons, or you’ve been playing instruments for 50 years, the University of Indianapolis Community Music Academy offers opportunities to nurture your passion for music!
Community Music Academy programs are available to students ages 5 to 105 who are located in Indianapolis and nearby counties. Programs are presented by highly trained instructors in a nurturing and inspiring atmosphere, where artistic gifts and technical skills can flourish.
PRIVATE INSTRUMENT AND VOICE LESSONS
Professional musicians from UIndy’s Department of Music offer high-quality, one-on-one lessons to students of all ages and ability levels. Professors and other trained instructors are available to teach private voice lessons as well as lessons on any instrument (organ, guitar, orchestral instruments and more).
All students are given opportunities to perform in solo and chamber concerts that are open to the public.
More details
- Weekly lessons typically run the course of an academic semester (summers included), although students may begin lessons at any time. The cost will be prorated based on the number of lessons that remain in the semester at the time of sign-up.
- Most private lessons are held on the UIndy campus, 1400 E. Hanna Ave., Indianapolis, IN 46227. For students enrolled in North Central High School’s Vocal Arts Institute, lessons are taught at the high school.
SUMMER PROGRAMS
UIndy Community Music summer programs offer an opportunity for students to immerse themselves in their chosen fields for several days, under the guidance of renowned faculty and guest artists.
Upcoming summer 2025 camps:
- JAZZ and RECORDING CAMP – (June 2-6) (ages 13-18)
This camp offers two tracks - one for performing musicians and one for students who want to learn more about Music Technology. The Jazz combo track students will receive instruction in jazz theory, jazz repertoire, improvisation, and will develop skills in performing in a jazz combo with faculty members including full-time and adjunct University of Indianapolis faculty. The Music Technology track will feature instruction in live and recorded sound and opportunities to record the jazz combo performers in a recording session as well as providing technology for a live performance. - SUMMER PIANO CAMP – (June 2-6) (ages 6-12)
The Annual UIndy Summer Piano Camp is open to pianists with all levels of experience. Camp activities include lessons, ensembles, music theory and history, games and more with a recital concluding the event.Instructors include UIndy faculty, alumni, and students. - MUSIC MAJOR IN THE MAKING – (June 9-13) (ages 13-18)
A one-week resident instrumental music camp focused on the daily life of a collegiate music major including core music classes, major area classes, daily ensemble rehearsals, masterclasses, and presentations. The goal is to prepare future music students for the life of a collegiate music major. - SUMMER PIANO INSTITUTE – (June 9-13) (ages 12-18)
The University of Indianapolis invites intermediate and advanced students ages 12-18 to an exciting week of music making at the 2025 UIndy Piano Institute June 9-13. Students participate in lessons, ensemble, masterclasses and workshops throughout the week and perform in a recital on the final day. Director of Keyboard Studies at UIndy, Dr. Ryan Behan, serves as the Artistic Director of the Institute with Dr. Rebecca Sorley also serving on the faculty. - MUSIC FOR ALL ABILITIES – (June 6 & June 7) (entering K through grade 12)
Camp participants of all abilities will engage in various music activities as small groups to focus on areas such as singing, movement to music, instrument playing, and original music creation (songwriting/composition). The students will work with music education and music therapy faculty and students for a fun-filled day of music making no matter the student’s abilities.
