Statement Regarding Background Checks for License-Eligible Programs:
The College of Education and Behavioral Sciences offers several undergraduate and graduate programs that prepare students to apply for professional licensure upon graduation. Our license-eligible programs collect both self-reported information regarding prior conduct and required criminal history background checks. Academic programs consider the following when reviewing prior conduct and criminal history information:
- Licensure standards and applicable laws associated with the profession;
- Ethical standards associated with the profession;
- The probability of placing students at clinical or educational training sites given their self-reported prior conduct and/or criminal convictions;
- The risk of harm to patients, clients, or students, particularly those from vulnerable backgrounds (such as children).
Admission to and graduation from a license-eligible program does not guarantee that the applicable state board will grant professional licensure. Criminal history may limit placement options or possibly prevent a student from completing required field experiences, which are mandatory for graduation and professional licensure.
