ABSN Online Track (Distance)

This course focuses on the holistic health and assessment of individuals and families across the life span. Students will learn the process of performing a complete physical assessment on health care recipients. Utilizing clinical reasoning and physical assessment findings will allow the student to differentiate between normal and abnormal findings. The development of therapeutic communication and cultural awareness is emphasized.

Prerequisite: Admission to the BSN program

This course introduces population-focused nursing practice through theoretical and practical applications. Principles of primary care and public health nursing are used to identify population health needs. Social and health policy, vulnerability issues, and environmental health issues are emphasized. Through community partnerships, students collaborate with individuals, families, and group members. Using the nursing process, students complete a community-centered project that fosters health promotion, risk reduction, and disease prevention.

This course explores the professional nursing practice and its role in health promotion and injury prevention in complex patient populations. A focus on holistic nursing care allows for a more in-depth exploration of nursing responsibilities and the health care needs of complex patients with rapidly changing health conditions and critical illnesses. Concepts of transitional nursing care and the nursing process are applied to complex patient care situations to enhance clinical reasoning skills. Knowledge of advanced technologies and nursing’s role in the coordination and collaboration of health care teams are emphasized.

This course is designed to provide nursing students in their final semester with an opportunity to develop their professional roles under the tutelage of a preceptor. This opportunity will facilitate nursing student transition into practice by enabling students to synthesize nursing knowledge and skills gained from previous coursework. With guidance from faculty, students will develop a quality improvement project to implement during their practicum. Throughout the term, students will focus on NCLEX-RN© examination preparation and the licensure process.
