Confidentiality Policy

The Student Counseling Center believes progress in therapy relies on a trusting therapist-client relationship. Therefore, all information shared in counseling is held in strict confidence, adhering to the ethical policies and procedures set forth by the American Psychological Association and state and federal laws.

  • Personal information gathered in counseling, including the fact that an individual has visited the Center, is confidential
  • No information is released to university officials, faculty members, parents, or outside agencies without written authorization from the individual in therapy

There are special cases that deviate from the Confidentiality Policy in order to prevent harm. Exceptions to the previous guidelines are:

  1. Instances in which there is imminent danger of serious harm to the client or to others because of the client's actions
  2. Information from the client indicating there is child abuse or other dependent abuse occurring either by the client or someone the client knows

A therapist must reveal information to prevent the types of harm listed. The client is informed of these exceptions in the initial session and if appropriate, will be involved in any and all disclosures related to these conditions.
