Graduate History Admission Requirements 

UIndy's history master's program operates on a rolling admissions policy, so applicants are accepted throughout the year. However, applicants who complete the admission process by July 15 for August admission and by Oct. 15 for January admission will have priority.

To apply to the program, submit the following:

Note: You do not need to submit everything at once to start the application process. For example, you can submit your application, recommendation letters and other materials before you take the GRE.

  • Online graduate application
  • $30 application fee
  • Official transcripts from each university or college attended, showing completion of a bachelor's degree from a regionally accredited institution. If applying from outside the U.S., the applicant's transcript should show the equivalent of a bachelor's degree.
  • Official Graduate Record Exam (GRE) scores
  • Three letters of recommendation by former professors who are familiar with your academic performance. If mailed, these individuals should directly mail their letters to the College of Arts and Sciences.
  • A statement of purpose 

Provisional admission

Prospective students who do not meet the above requirements may petition for provisional admission to take up to 12 credit hours of courses. Students wishing to go beyond 12 hours and complete the degree program must apply for regular admission and meet all other requirements of the program. Students who are enrolled at another accredited graduate school and wish to transfer credits earned at the University of Indianapolis back to their home institution may be admitted by meeting provisional admission requirements. In order to be accepted for provisional admission, students must:

  • Complete an application
  • Provide proof of a bachelor's degree or a transcript indicating good standing in the graduate program at their parent institution.

Transfer credit

Transfer credit is generally limited to eight hours. Students must have achieved a minimum grade of B (3.0) on all transferred work and must have completed the credit hours within five years prior to application for admission or during the five-year period allowed for completion of the graduate program. Transfer credit is considered for approval by the program director once the student has achieved degree candidacy. No credit will be given for work done on a pass/fail basis. Permission to complete graduate work at another institution must be approved in advance.

Additional requirements for international applicants

  • Students for whom English is a second language must submit TOEFL and TWE scores of at least 550 on the paper test, 213 on the computer-based test, or an 80 on the Internet-based test
  • Provide certification of finances (for students who are applying for a visa)
  • A photocopy of your passport
  • Upon acceptance, the student may be issued a valid I-20 to process the F1 student visa. It is the applicant's responsibility to request a visa. The University of Indianapolis will have no role in the application process for a visa.
