Dietetic Internship
College of Health Sciences

From professional athletes to recovering healthcare patients to the average Joe, everyone has to eat. Registered dietitians leverage the powerful relationship between food and nutrition to lead their communities to healthier outcomes. The University of Indianapolis empowers the next generation of registered dietitians through its dietetic internship program and offers a one-of-a-kind concentration in sport nutrition. With an emphasis on experiential learning, the dietetic internship program offers students highly-sought after clinical rotations through UIndy’s collaboration with Community Health Network under the guidance of experienced preceptors. Upon successful completion of their 1,200 hours of supervised professional practice in the food service management, community nutrition, and clinical nutrition, students will be prepared to sit for the national RDN exam.

Real-World Experience
At UIndy, education and career-readiness go hand-in-hand. In addition to traditional classroom instruction, the dietetic internship program offers students professional practice hours in which they will gain hands-on experience in food service management, community nutrition, and clinical nutrition in real-world settings such as the Indiana Department of Health and the National Institute of Fitness and Health. For students pursuing a concentration in sports nutrition, UIndy’s NCAA Division II Athletics department provides opportunities throughout the year to see the relationship between dietetics and sports first-hand. Upon graduation, students will not only be prepared to pass their required professional exam but will also have a strong professional network from which to build their careers.
Nutrition and exercise are lifelong passions and I am thrilled to be the director of a dietetics internship program that offers this powerful combination of skills for emerging dietitians. I worked in the fitness and wellness industry for more than a decade and have watched the demand explode for dietitians with the skills to help people reach their nutrition goals. UIndy’s inclusive and supportive community offers the one of best academic environments - experiential learning leads the way.
Experienced, Invested Faculty
With decades of experience in healthcare, nutrition, and sports, UIndy’s faculty bring unique insights and up-to-date practices into the classroom to prepare students to succeed in their future careers. The dietetic internship program includes interactions with faculty from several departments in the College of Health Sciences, including Kinesiology, Health and Sports, Athletic Training, and Physical Therapy, exposing students to a variety of healthcare perspectives. Outside of UIndy, faculty also remain engaged in current dietetic and nutrition matters and are actively involved with professional dietetic practice groups such as Sports and Human Performance Nutrition.
