Financial aid you don't pay back

Education grants are a valuable source of financial assistance for college students. College grants are a type of financial aid that you don’t need to pay back and can be used to help pay for tuition, books, housing, and other school expenses. They help many pursue their educational dreams and make college a reality.

Grants for Freshman, Transfer, and Current Students

  • Description: Federal grant program for undergraduate students receiving a Pell Grant
  • Amount: $400 each year
  • Eligibility:
  • Applying: Automatically considered for SEOG by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA)
  • Description: Need-based grant to help Indiana residents pay for tuition and fees at Indiana colleges
  • Eligibility:
  • Renewal requirements: Complete at least 24 credit hours by the end of each academic year (may be eligible for a larger award by completing 30 credit hours)
  • Other incentives: Eligible to earn additional financial aid incentives for academic performance including maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, earning an associate degree before enrolling in a bachelor's degree program, or earning at least 39 credit hours by the end of an academic year
  • Applying: Automatically considered for the Frank O’Bannon Grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15.
  • Description: Indiana’s early promise program, offering income-eligible Indiana students up to four years of tuition assistance
  • Eligibility:
    • Graduate from an Indiana high school with a GPA of at least 2.5 and earn at least a Core 40 diploma
    • Fulfill the 21st Century Scholar Pledge 
    • Complete the Scholar Success Program requirements during high school and in college
    • File the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) each year by April 15
    • Apply to an eligible Indiana college or university as a high school senior and enroll within one year of graduation
    • Meet Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements and complete at least 30 credits each year
  • Applying: Students apply for the 21st Century Scholars Program in 7th or 8th grade and must file the FAFSA by April 15 for each year in college
  • Renewal requirements: 30 credit hours by the end of each academic year (may be eligible for a lesser amount if at least 24 credit hours are completed each academic year)
  • Description: One-time grant for students who graduate from an Indiana public high school at least one year early
  • Eligibility:
    • Must be an Indiana resident and a U.S. Citizen or eligible non-citizen
    • Must have attended a publicly supported high school on a full-time equivalency basis for at least the last two semesters before the student graduated.
    • Must have been awarded a minimum of a Core 40 high school diploma by the end of grade 11, including any summer course work completed by July 1 of the year of graduation.
    • Must enroll as a full-time, degree-seeking student at an eligible institution not later than the fall semester (or its equivalent, as determined by the Commission) in the academic year immediately following the year in which the student graduates from high school.

University of Indianapolis grants are awarded to undergraduate students who need financial assistance and are enrolled in at least six hours of day division classes each semester. Students must have at least a 2.0 GPA to be considered. Grants may be renewed each year for students who continue to meet eligibility requirements. The amount of the grant depends on the family’s financial need and available funds.Students should file the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) to be considered.

Grants for Adult Learners

  • Description: Need-based grant to help Indiana residents pay for tuition and fees at Indiana colleges
  • Eligibility:
  • Renewal requirements: Complete at least 24 credit hours by the end of each academic year (may be eligible for a larger award by completing 30 credit hours)
  • Other incentives: Eligible to earn additional financial aid incentives for academic performance including maintaining a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0, earning an associate degree before enrolling in a bachelor's degree program, or earning at least 39 credit hours by the end of an academic year
  • Applying: Automatically considered for the Frank O’Bannon Grant by completing the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by April 15.
  • Description: Designed to help working adults starting or completing an associate's degree or bachelor's degree with the costs of tuition and fees

  • Eligibility:

    • Be an Indiana resident and a U.S. citizen or eligible non-citizen;

    • Be financially independent as determined by the FAFSA and demonstrate financial need as determined by the FAFSA

    • Be enrolled, or plan to enroll, in a course of study leading to an associate or first bachelor's degree;

    • Be enrolled in at least six (6) credit hours or their equivalent in any academic term

    • Maintain satisfactory academic progress

  • Applying: Complete the FAFSA at fafsa.gov and submit an Adult Student Grant application at ScholarTrack

  • Renewal requirements:

    • File the FAFSA each academic year

    • Continue to meet the state's threshold for showing financial need

    • Earn at least 18 credit hours
