Articles

I have placed on this website the following articles:

Jens Høyrup, “Oxford" and "Cremona": On the relation between two versions of al-Khwarizmi’s Algebra”. Pp. 159-183 in: Actes du 3me Colloque Maghrébin sur l’Histoire des Mathématiques Arabes, Tipaza (Alger, Algérie), 1-3 Décembre 1990, vol. II. Alger: Association Algérienne d’Histoire des Mathématiques, 1998. The published version contains many errors, thus I have put Høyrup’s version here. Unfortunately the diagrams are lacking in this file.

I wrote the remaining articles:

  • Was al-Khwārizmī an applied algebraist?” (1999) This is a terrible article I wrote before I began studying Arabic algebra seriously. I only keep it here because it is now on other people’s sites, and I want to maintain a smidgen of control over it.
  • “Response to Jens Høyrup” (2010). My response to Høyrup’s answer to my review of his book Jacopo da Firenze’s Tractatus Algorizmi and Early Italian Abbacus Culture.
  • “Geometry and proof in Abū Kāmil’s algebra”.  Pp. 234-256 in: Actes du 10ème Colloque Maghrébin sur l’Histoire des Mathématiques Arabes (Tunis, 29-30-31 mai 2010). Tunis: L’Association Tunisienne des Sciences Mathématiques, 2011. I include this and my 2018 article below on my website because these publications are difficult to locate.

My translation and commentary of the worked-out problems in al-Khwārizmī’s Algebra:

  • “Al-Khwārizmī’s worked-out problems” (translation, 2012)
  • “The series of problems in al-Khwārizmī’s Algebra” (commentary, 2012)
  • These were written in connection with HASTEC's online Carnet de Recherche.
  • “Arithmetical proofs in Arabic algebra”. Pp. 215-238 in: Ezzaim Laabid, ed., Actes du 12è Colloque Maghrébin sur l'Histoire des Mathématiques Arabes: Marrakech 26 au 28 mai 2016. Marrakech: École Normale Supérieure, 2018.
