General Engineering covers all of engineering – designing, developing, building, testing and maintaining. This program differs from the other engineering majors (Mechanical, Electrical, etc.) because it is an interdisciplinary, broadly focused major studying concepts related to several engineering disciplines. The initial coursework for General Engineers is the same as the course work taken by other engineering majors, and you will interact closely in many of the same courses other engineering students are taking for most of your junior and senior year courses. After a broad introduction to the subject, you will be able to explore the different available specialties based on your interests and start planning for your future career. You are also well prepared to work in a non-engineering field such as law.
Advantages
- Offers students the opportunity to work with real clients to develop novel solutions to real-world problems
- Equips students to be relevant in diverse engineering industries
- Through our DesignSpine curriculum, our students learn to work with multidisciplinary teams, a skill that is in high demand in industries
- Provides hands-on project-based learning that emphasizes the connections between fundamental engineering analysis and practical engineering design
- Develops teamwork, leadership, and communication, alongside technical engineering skills
Curriculum
The General Engineering curriculum provides a strong background in core engineering and science courses with an emphasis on additional engineering topics based on your interests. These curriculum guides outline the different classes you will need to take as a General Engineering major. The general education guide provides a list of all the classes you need in order to fulfill UIndy’s general education requirements. The General Engineering guide lists all of the classes you will need to take in order to fulfill the major’s requirements. Be sure to take a look at both guides in order to get a complete picture of what classes you'll take at UIndy.
Facilities
Learn to use state-of-the-art engineering facilities, then apply what you've learned to DesignSpine projects with real corporate clients, and make connections that often lead to internship and job opportunities.
SEE OUR ENGINEERING FACILITIES
There are also plenty of opportunities outside of the curriculum for students to explore their passions. Our maker space and shops are open to all students. We also have a Robotics Club, a Racing Club, and active student chapters of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) and the Society of Women Engineers (SWE).
