Housing & room assignments
Housing assignments are determined by the date the housing deposit and application are received. The earlier the housing materials are completed and returned, the better the chance of receiving your requested assignment.
Housing assignments will be mailed to your home address in July. This mailing will include your roommate's name, address and arrival information. In addition, your residence hall assignment and meal plan option will be included in the mailing; however, you will not receive your room assignment until the residence halls open for move-in.
East Hall and Roberts Hall have single rooms. These buildings are open to all upper-class students (sophomore-senior). Single rooms in the other residence halls are only available if extra space exists. There is an additional charge per semester for a single room.
Handicap accessible rooms
Cory Bretz Hall, Central Hall, East Hall and Roberts Hall all have rooms that are accessible for disabled students.
Changing rooms or residence halls
After housing assignments are sent out, it is very difficult for them to be changed. However, housing adjustment requests may be made by contacting your residence hall staff after the first two weeks of classes, but changes are not guaranteed.
Early arrival & school breaks
Only students who are approved through campus organizations, offices, or athletic teams will be permitted to move in prior to move-in day.
All of the Residence Halls do stay open during longer break periods for students who need to stay. Students staying over the breaks must pay an additional fee to cover the cost of additional housing and security (Thanksgiving: $60; Christmas: $200; Spring Break: $90). Meal service is not available during these vacation periods.
In most cases, roommates for freshmen are assigned. If a specific roommate is not requested, you will be assigned a roommate based upon your housing deposit date and the information you provided on your application. Students may not request to live with someone of a specific race or nationality. Living with students from different backgrounds complements the classroom education. Residence hall assignments are consistent with the University's commitment to a stated policy of nondiscrimination.
If a specific roommate is requested, we will make every effort to accommodate that request, though they are not guaranteed. The requests must be mutual, and will be honored on a space-available basis. If possible, housing applications should be submitted together or around the same time. We honor roommate preferences before residence hall preferences, so both persons should request the same residence hall. If your requested roommate has not been admitted to UIndy yet, we will make every effort to honor the request, but it is not guaranteed. Returning students have the option to sign up for their same room, or with specific roommates for different rooms or halls during the spring semester of each year.
After housing assignments are sent out, it is very difficult to change roommates. If roommates are have difficulty getting along, we encourage them to work with each other and residence life staff to work out the problems. However, housing adjustment requests can be made by contacting your residence hall staff after the first two weeks of classes and we will work with you to address the situation.
