Prof picked to lead state nursing association
University of Indianapolis faculty member Barbara B. Kelly has been named president of the Board of Directors for the Indiana State Nurses Association.
An assistant professor in UIndy’s School of Nursing, Kelly was elected to a two-year term at the association’s annual member meeting in October.
ISNA is the professional organization for the state’s registered nurses, representing the profession and working to ensure quality health care through its leadership and advocacy on issues such as education, licensure and workforce development. Kelly has been a member for 31 years, serving recently as a board member and legislative district liaison.
“Working with policymakers on decisions that affect Hoosiers’ health care is extremely rewarding,” she said of her ISNA work. “I love the profession of nursing, and I can’t think of a better way to serve it or the citizens of this state.”
A registered nurse and board-certified family nurse-practitioner, Kelly joined the UIndy faculty in 1993 after working in positions that included staff nurse in ER and critical care, coordinator of cardiac rehabilitation at Winona Hospital and director of home health at St. Francis Hospital. She has worked on many community health projects and currently serves as coordinator of UIndy’s graduate Family Nurse Practitioner track and clinical director of the university’s Koval Nursing Center.
A resident of Morgan County and a graduate of Beech Grove High School, she holds a bachelor’s degree in science and nursing from Purdue University as well as a master’s degree in nursing and a post-master’s degree in primary health care from Indiana University.
