Art department to unveil permanent collection, renovated classroom and studio spaces

T.C. SteeleIn conjunction with a month-long exhibition of pieces from its permanent art collection – like this T.C. Steele landscape at right – the University of Indianapolis Department of Art & Design will show off its newly renovated classroom and studio spaces.

An open house and exhibition reception is scheduled 4 to 8 p.m. Friday, Nov. 6, in conjunction with the city’s First Fridays events. Labs and studios will be open for tours, and faculty and students will be on hand to answer questions. Admission is free to the event, aimed at alumni, prospective students and the general public.

The remodeling project is the first spatial change to the department since it moved to the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center building 15 years ago. The renovations reflect changes within the department and in the field of art, such as the shift from traditional to digital photography and the rapid growth of the department’s graphic design program.

“We adjusted the space we have to fit the needs we have,” explains professor and department chair Dee Schaad. “We’ve remodeled to fit the times.”

The exhibition in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center Gallery will feature 25 two- and three-dimensional selections from UIndy’s permanent art collection, including newly acquired pieces and pieces that have never been publicly exhibited.

The art department is accredited by the National Association of Schools of Art & Design. Degree programs include a bachelor of fine arts and a master of arts. For more information, call (317) 788-3253 or visit http://arts.uindy.edu.
