2017 Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders

The 41st Annual Richard G. Lugar Symposium for Tomorrow's Leaders will take place on Saturday, Dec. 9. We are proud and excited to offer this great leadership training opportunity to the students of Indiana, and we're looking forward to seeing you there.

Registration is now open, and the registration link has been emailed to high schools. If you are interested in attending the Lugar Symposium, speak with your principal, guidance director and/or history teacher to get more information.

Two weeks before the Symposium, we will send an email to all registered students and will include a schedule for the day, campus map and directions to UIndy.

Register Now

Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. (EST) in the Schwitzer Student Center Atrium. Directions and a campus map are located at We suggest parking in Lots #14, 17, or 11, and no parking pass will be necessary, as all lots are open parking on the weekends.

Upon arrival, participating students will be given a detailed schedule for the day (including which afternoon current event sessions they will attend) and an ID badge.

Parents, teachers, counselors and others who accompany students to the Lugar Symposium will also need to check in and collect their materials at a separate table in the Schwitzer Student Atrium, since they follow a separate agenda for the day.

Senator Lugar will give the keynote address, which he considers his most important speech of the year. After his keynote address, Senator Lugar devotes time to a question and answer session with student participants.

A complimentary buffet lunch is provided for all attendees and adults who accompany them.

Each participant will attend two afternoon sessions focusing on current events. The sessions last 75 minutes. The format for these sessions features two experts presenting opposing viewpoints, followed by an informal discussion. We make every effort to place students in their two top session choices, and we know all the sessions will be insightful and informative.

The day's activities will conclude at 4:30 p.m., and students may be picked up at the Schwitzer Student Center (same building where they register in the morning).

What to wear

The dress for the day is business casual attire, and all students will have their photos taken with Senator Lugar. Photos are taken by the county where the high school is located, and the students will receive their commemorative T-shirts at that time.

There is no charge to attend the Symposium. The only cost to students who attend the Symposium will be normal travel expenses. Where transportation problems for the students exist, high school faculty members and parents are invited to attend the Symposium.

Please email Brittany Gray at if you have any questions. We'll see you on Dec. 9!
