Campus Growth & Change

Watch the campus undergo a number of physical changes over the next few years as UIndy continues to focus on providing the highest-quality academic, recreational and social experience for our students. The first of these campus developments is a new, 48,000-square-foot addition to Schwitzer Student Center designed to greatly expand and improve dining and gathering space.

An overhaul of the library, a new residence hall, and a student athletics and recreational facility also are on the drawing board, while the chief thoroughfare through campus, Hanna Avenue, is scheduled for a major safety and design upgrade.

Schwitzer Student Center Expansion and Makeover

The Schwitzer Student Center project is complete and final touches are being made to the surrounding landscape. The division of space into various serving stations in the remodeled dining hall has drastically reduced the wait time for students to get meals. In addition, dining options have been expanded to include the new UIndy Grill, which features a Sub Hub, Fiesta Grill and Streets Grill and a remodeled Perk coffee shop. The former Trustee's dining hall has been opened up for an additional student lounge area and there is greater seating capacity throughout the entire renovated space.

The addition to Schwitzer features the new President's and Trustee's dining rooms as well as UIndy Hall, a large conference/meeting space that can be partitioned into three smaller rooms. The second floor and lower levels remain mostly unfinished to allow for future growth, though workout equipment donated by general contractor F.A. Wilhelm Construction is located on the second floor.

East Hall

Construction is well under way on a new residence hall, dubbed "East Hall," which will be located east of New Hall on the former location of the softball diamond. The project is scheduled for completion by August 1. In addition to the building, 250 parking spaces also will be created. Plans are underway to relocate the softball field elsewhere on campus.

The design and features of the new residence hall are based on input from students. The four-story building will have 160 single-occupant rooms, each with private access and a bath shared with just one other room. Every floor will have lounges, and two-story atriums on the first and third floors will have overhanging balconies on the second and fourth floors, providing a very open feel.

The hall is being built with Autoclaved Aerated Concrete block, a “green” product made from recycled material that creates an energy-efficient structure that is both fire-resistant and quiet. UIndy was an early adopter of this material; Central Hall was one of the first buildings in the nation to be constructed of AAC block.

Hanna Avenue Improvements

The City of Indianapolis is planning a significant upgrade to the stretch of Hanna Avenue between East Street and Carson Avenue, which includes the UIndy campus. The University will invest about $2 million for the Shelby Street-to-State Avenue section of the roadway to reroute unsightly power lines and provide extensive landscaping.

The city is expected to put the project up for bid in August, with construction starting in September. Changes to the portion of Hanna Avenue along the UIndy campus include widening the roadway and installing a landscaped boulevard down the middle. The project is expected to last about two years.

Parking

UIndy has gained about 70 parking spots through the repaving of the old tennis courts, which created 78 spots, and the creation of two temporary gravel lots. In addition, 250 new spots will be created as part of the East Hall construction project, which is scheduled for completion in August.
