Jazz Ensemble and Jazz Combo Auditions

Do you play a musical instrument and want to play jazz while you're attending UIndy? Audition for the UIndy Jazz Ensemble and/or Jazz Combo!

We've got an exciting year coming up! Both groups play at least two concerts per semester and appear during Jazz Week in April with world class jazz musicians from across the nation. Please read through the information below and sign up for one audition time by Friday, August 25. Auditions will take place in the Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center during the following times:

  • Saxophones: 12-2:15 p.m.
  • Piano, Guitar, Vibes, Bass and Drums: 2:15-4 p.m.
  • Trumpets and Trombones: 4-6 p.m.

The online form will be closed on the morning of Friday, August 25, but you may still sign up on the bulletin board by CDFAC 109 near the lockers. Email Dr. Mark O'Connor at oconnorm@uindy.edu with any questions.

Audition Requirements

Vocalists

  1. A completed information form (available at the audition)
  2. Please bring a song to sing in the jazz style. Jazz standards are preferred.

Saxophones, trumpets and trombones

  1. A completed information form (available at the audition)
  2. Perform one prepared piece that demonstrates your technical ability. An etude in the jazz style is preferred, but you may perform a classical piece if you wish.
  3. Sight read two passages from a big band chart.
  4. Improvise (optional, but preferred) on blues in Bb or F concert, or Rhythm changes in Bb concert. A play-along track will be provided.

Rhythm section: piano, guitar, vibes, bass, drums*

  1. A completed information form (available at the audition)
  2. Perform one prepared piece that demonstrates your technical ability. An etude in the jazz style is preferred, but you may perform a classical piece if you wish.
  3. Sight read two passages from a big band chart.
  4. Improvise (optional, but preferred) on blues in Bb or F concert, or Rhythm changes in Bb concert. A play-along track will be provided.
  5. Bassists and drummers will play grooves in Swing, Ballad and Bossa Nova or Samba styles.

*Note: Bassists and guitarists must bring their own patch cords. Amps will be provided.
Vibraphonists must bring mallets. A vibraphone will be provided.
Drummers must bring sticks and brushes. A drum set will be provided.
