Background
Has conducted extensive research in the areas of community development, the impact of toxic pollution on communities, and civic engagement. Taught in Ireland (University College Dublin), Poland (University of Warsaw), and at the UIndy campus in Athens, Greece. Led the University's unique collaborations that resulted in the development of two off-campus university-community facilities: the Wheeler Arts Community and the Fountain Square Center.

Prior to returning to Indiana, taught at the University of Central Oklahoma and was chosen as the Liberal Arts new faculty member of the year. Published in Sociological Forum, Qualitative Sociology, the Journal of Family Issues, and Family Relations. Has had work featured in The Wall Street Journal, The Huffington Post, Jezebel, Flash Magazine, and numerous national and international papers.

I love the opportunity to build personal relationships with my students. Because of our rapport, we end up having such great discussions together in the classroom that I often walk away feeling that I learned just as much as my students did that day.

Background
Areas of administrative experience include institutional research, grants and sponsored programs, accreditation, community programs, service-learning, and the development of international partnerships.

Community service includes serving as President of the HealthNet Board of Directors, overseeing a network of ten primary health care centers serving low-income families throughout Indianapolis.

Expertise includes knowledge of international educational systems beginning with experience as an international student in a Canadian University.

Research Interests
poverty and homelessness, including management of the homeless count for Indianapolis in 1999; service learning in cross-cultural context with international presentations and publications; ethnic studies, including study of the Hispanic community in Indianapolis

Teaching interests include social problems, the family, and sociology of religion.

Has published a chapter “Learning from Lennon: Using Songs and Stardom to Promote Peace and Social Justice” in Shawn Chandler Bingham’s, Ed. The Art of Social Critique, Lanham, MD: Lexington Books, 2012. Former president of the Association for Humanist Sociology (2009). Wrote the proposal for the first million-dollar Lilly Endowment program grant received by the University in 1998.

contributions of Indiana wineries to the quality of life and economic opportunity in local communities, community development and change, environmentally sustainable practices, the uses of songs in social movements

Before coming to UIndy, worked for five years as the Administrator of Research for the Salvation Army Correctional Services Program in Chicago, IL. Has published articles on an array of criminal justice topics and the book Drug Court Justice (Peter Lang Publishing, 2008).
