About the MS in Anthropology Program

The Master of Science in Anthropology program provides opportunities for students to maximize academic and technical skills in the science of Anthropology and Archaeology through outstanding classroom, lab and field experiences. The program is founded on anthropological and archaeological theory and hands-on training, which students apply to their research and the unique scientific study they are expected to complete for graduation.

The program also offers exposure to cutting-edge technology and encourages students to be active members of the professional scientific community. It is intended for highly motivated and talented students who plan on becoming a professional archaeologists or going on to doctoral study.

Program Length & Format

This full-time program is typically completed in 2-3 years, with students taking traditional face-to-face classes during the day.

Curriculum

The Master of Science in Anthropology curriculum is structured with the intent to give students a well-rounded, cultural perspective. The approach is three-tiered and draws on three major bases: material culture studies, biocultural studies, and comparative ethnology.

All students complete a minimum of 36 credit hours, including five core courses and a thesis. Studies focus on one of two primary tracks.

  • Traditional archeology

Thesis

Each student will conduct a unique scientific study that culminates in a thesis project. To fulfill this requirement, students may complete a traditional academic thesis or submit a manuscript article to a professional journal.

When Can I Start?

Applications are accepted year-round, but the priority deadline for funding consideration for fall admission is February 15.

MS in Anthropology Admission Requirements

  1. Bachelor's degree with a major or minor in Anthropology or a closely related field
  2. Several undergraduate or graduate courses taken in anthropology and the natural sciences with grades above a C; Ideally, these should include a semester in cultural anthropology, biological anthropology, archaeology, statistics and geology.
  3. Minimum cumulative undergraduate GPA of 3.2 on a 4.0 scale
  4. Minimum GRE score in the 50th percentile in both verbal and quantitative sections
  5. Minimum score of 79 on the TOEFL (IBT) for students whose native language is not English; The TOEFL cannot substitute for the GRE.

Applicants to the MS in Anthropology program are admitted on a rolling basis. The following application materials must be submitted for consideration:

  1. University of Indianapolis Graduate Admission Application
  2. Typed personal statement outlining career goals, research interests and reasons for applying to the program
  3. Typed list of all relevant coursework in anthropology and the natural sciences, with grades received
  4. Current resume or curriculum vitae listing prior anthropological/archaeological experience, field schools, special training, publications and presentations
  5. Three reference letters submitted on the Anthropology Reference Forms. Please choose individuals who are either familiar with your academic performance or who have supervised you in anthropology or science-related activities or research. If mailed, these individuals should directly mail their letters to the Shaheen College of Arts and Sciences.
  6. Official transcripts showing all undergraduate and graduate coursework
  7. Official GRE and TOEFL scores, submitted by the testing agencies
  8. $30 application fee; Checks should be made to the University of Indianapolis.
