Career Services for Future Students
It's not easy to figure out a career that's right for you or a college major that will help you best prepare for it. There are countless career possibilities and a variety of educational paths to them. You certainly want to make sure that the school you attend can help you sort out your options and develop a plan to reach your goals. Below are some of the ways the Office of Career Services supports UIndy students in their career development.
Career Exploration and Planning
Through counseling appointments and group sessions, we help students clarify goals, values, interests, skills, personality characteristics and other factors. Taking into account the qualifications required and sought after by employers in today’s fluid job market, we work with them to determine the career and academic options that make the most sense. Tools we use include the popular Strong Interest Inventory and Myers Briggs Type Indicator.
Another tool is Sigi 3, an online career guidance program available to students once they are enrolled or have a UIndy email account. If you are not officially enrolled yet, you can still take advantage of this resource by going directly to Sigi3.org and obtaining a subscription for just under $20. We think it's worth the investment.
Other online resources you may wish to access at no cost are the Occupational Outlook Handbook (U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics) and O'NET OnLine.
Part-time Employment While in College
If you've been admitted to UIndy, registered for classes and have a UIndy email account, you can begin prospecting for work on or off campus using JobHoundConnect, our employment information and referral system. Announcements about campus and work study jobs become available around August 1 each year. Employers contact our office year-round regarding part-time and seasonal openings. They also attend our annual Student Employment Fair at the start of the school year and visit campus on designated days to connect with students over the busy lunch hours.
Internship and Job Search Readiness
Acquiring career-related experience and skills during college is absolutely essential. A degree with a solid GPA can only take you so far. Employers want to see concrete evidence of your abilities and drive to succeed. That’s why we work hard to help UIndy students identify part-time employment, internship opportunities, co-curricular and volunteer experiences that offer the chance to further develop, learn new skills, and build their resumes. In addition, coaching students in the art of making their best impression upon prospective employers is one of the most important tasks we do every day. We help students all year through special presentations, workshops and class appearances, mock interview sessions and one-on-one advising appointments.
Connecting with Employers
Each year, Career Services hosts or co-hosts a number of networking events and activities. We also partner with 13 other colleges and universities to sponsor three additional major job fairs. From October through March, employers in search of interns and full-time employees visit campus for recruiting presentations and candidate interviews.
JobHoundConnect (JHC), UIndy's employment information and referral system, is where our employer partners go to list their openings and where information about all kinds of career-building programs and events may be found. JHC is accessible to any enrolled student. Program and event announcements may also be found on the Career Services Events/Activities website page.
Grad School and Post-College Bridge and Gap Year Alternatives
Some students enroll in UIndy as the first phase of their preparation for a career that requires education beyond an undergraduate degree. Career Services provides guidance on the numerous aspects of planning for graduate or professional study. Another alternative to graduate school or full-time employment after graduation is a bridge year experience, such as the Peace Corps. We can help you explore the many options for a bridge or gap year experience.
