GLACS Movie Night: Pan's Labyrinth (El laberinto del fauno) Drama- Spanish language film
Location: - HEAL 138
Time: 6:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Details: Spanish film subtitled in English

Mexican filmmaker Guillermo del Toro returns to the phantasmagorical cinema that defined such early fare as Cronos and The Devil's Backbone with this haunting fantasy-drama set in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War and detailing the strange journeys of an imaginative young girl who may be the mythical princess of an underground kingdom. Her mother, Carmen recently remarried to sadistic army captain Vidal and soon to bear the cruel military man's child, shy young Ofelia is forced to entertain herself as her recently-formed family settles into their new home nestled deep in the Spanish countryside. As Ofelia's bed-ridden mother lies immobilized in anticipation of her forthcoming child and her high-ranking stepfather remains determined to fulfill the orders of General Francisco Franco to crush a nearby guerilla uprising, the young girl soon ventures into an elaborate stone labyrinth presided over by the mythical faun Pan. Convinced by Pan that she is the lost princess of legend and that in order to return to her underground home she must complete a trio of life-threatening tasks, Ofelia sets out to reclaim her kingdom and return to her grieving father as Vidal's housekeeper Mercedes and doctor plot secretly on the surface to keep the revolution alive. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Labyrinth, walking prayer
Location: Schwitzer Student Center - McCleary Chapel
Time: 9:00 AM to 9:00 PM
Details: Walking Prayer

Labyrinth

What is a labyrinth?
The labyrinth is a model or metaphor for life. The Christian life is often described as a pilgrimage of the faithful who are in but not of the world. We progress down a path thats laid out by God, even though we rarely foresee its twists and turns, toward the eventual goal of union with Christ. (Jones, Tony. Soul Shaper, p. 147).

The labyrinth is a walking prayer. The labyrinth itself is just a tool, a guide that helps us as we pray. When we walk the labyrinth, we pray with our mind, heart and body. We reflect on what we need to let go of in our lives so that we might truly follow Jesus. The act of walking while we pray can help us slow down and focus. Our mind can become so active that it is hard to concentrate. As we walk slowly, it allows our mind to slow down so that we can talk with God with fewer distractions.

How to pray using the labyrinth:
The labyrinth has only one path which leads to its center and out again. The twists and turns of the path are reflections of our own spiritual journey. We know that our relationship with God has some surprising turns on the way.

Beginning to walk the labyrinth
Before you begin walking the labyrinth, pause and take time to breathe deeply. Begin your walk with an open heart. Think about your life. What are you struggling with? Are you afraid of beginning this new phase of your life? Take whatever is in your heart to Jesus. As you walk to the center of the labyrinth, talk to Jesus about whatever is in your heart and mind these days.

How you choose to walk the labyrinth is up to you. Try to walk it slowly enough that you are able to reflect on your life. Pay attention to each step and be aware of your whole self praying to God. You might want to take time to stop along the way. Others might be walking the labyrinth with you be aware of how you share your space with them. Are you comfortable letting them pass you or having to pass them? Does it mirror your encounters with others in our daily life?

When you reach the center
When you reach the center of the labyrinth, take time to rest as long as you like. You can stand, sit or kneel whatever is comfortable for you. Take time to rest with Jesus.

Walking back
As you walk from the center of the labyrinth, ask Jesus for the grace you need to walk each day with him. Jesus knows you better than you know yourself. Allow Gods peace to fill you as you continue the pilgrimage of your daily life.

Reflecting on the experience of walking the labyrinth
When you finish walking the labyrinth, take time to reflect on the experience. You might want to do this at a later time when you are by yourself. You might want to take time to journal about the experience or talk to another about it.

This fragile relationship of forms exposes the delicate balance between grace and imminent danger, similar to the fleeting ballet of courting birds or the hostility felt between foes engaged in a dogfight. Through references to aeronautical form, the sculptures communicate tension and dance in direct opposition of fundamental forces.

John Marshall: The Great Chief Justice
Location: Schwitzer Student Center - UIndy Hall B
Time: 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM
Details: As part of the History & PSCI Department Symposium, Dr. David Root will discuss Chief Justice John Marshall who served the longest tenure of any Chief Justice. During his three-plus decades of service, coming shortly after the founding of the United States, Marshall transformed the Supreme Court from a weak, rinky-dink institution into the towering authority and final arbiter of the Constitution that it is today. In short, Marshall built the Court. But the way he did so was by a method much more ornery and rambunctious than what you’d expect from a Chief Justice. John Marshall was no genteel aristocrat of prim and proper conduct but instead a self-educated backwoods man of action. In examining the genius of his leadership madness, Dr. David Root peers into the mists of the early Court and takes a look under the robe of the Great Chief Justice.

Monday, November 27, 7:30 p.m.

The Ronen Chamber Ensemble's collaboration with the University of Indianapolis continues this season with a concert featuring different perspectives on native music. Francis Poulenc's Sextet for piano and winds is a work "as frankly French as Stravinsky's is Slav," while UIndy alum Matthew Bridgham's first Ronen commission celebrates Indiana's bicentenary. Paul Krasnovsky leads the ensemble with soloist Mitzi Westra in Luciano Berio's 1964 suite Folk Songs, a cycle that incorporates folksongs from places as distant from one another as Armenia, Italy, and Kentucky, and in languages ranging from Azerbaijani to Occitan.

When the owner of a Turkish food stand hires his nephew to film a commercial in hopes of bringing in new business, the competition between the Turkish stand and an adjacent Greek food stand finds family tensions rising in director Anno Saul's darkly comic family drama. Though the aspiring filmmaker's catchy commercial does little to increase the profits of the struggling Turkish food stand, the owner of the nearby Greek stand sees the potential in advertising and soon places a request for his own commercial with the eager young director. Though his disapproving uncle makes it undoubtedly clear that he vehemently disapproves of the endeavor, the filmmaker drives a sizeable wedge between himself and his family when he sets about shooting the advertisement regardless of their objections. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi
