Faculty Artist Concert Series: Dancing with Chopin
Location: Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center - Ruth Lilly Performance Hall
Time: 7:30 PM to 9:00 PM
Details: Faculty Artist Concert Series: Dancing with Chopin
Friday, January 19, 7:30 p.m.

Richard Ratliff, piano

The critic and poet Ludwig Rellstab wrote about Chopin's first two books of Mazurkas in 1833: "In search of earsplitting dissonances, tortured transitions, piercing modulations, disgusting dislocations of the melody and rhythm, he is unremitting and -- we would say -- inexhaustible." What is there in Chopin's approach to these triple-meter Polish dances that makes them arresting, unsettling, inspiring -- or even "tortured" and "piecing"? Richard Ratliff explores Chopin's Mazurkas of the 1830s and 40s as they evolved into full-blown miniature dramas.
