Programs and Activities
Asian Programs has been diligent in its purpose of serving as an amalgamation agent between UIndy faculty and students, and the university’s international partners in Asia. Asian Programs has brought programs and cultural activities that have brought a wealth of enriching experiences for our campus community. Activities are publicized in both local and national newspapers which have enhanced the visibility of UIndy.
The following are sample programs and activities organized or initiated by Asian Programs in the past few years:
- envisioning, organization, and launching the Au-Ho-nien Museum on campus
- facilitation of international scholars' visits from Taiwan, Japan, Korea, and China to UIndy, and from UIndy to Taiwan and China
- organization of symposia in the U.S.A. and South Africa
- sponsorship of Asian art exhibits, lectures, performances
- implementation of inter-university agreements
- exploration and development of new interdisciplinary academic collaborations with sister institutions
- recruitment of students from Taiwan, China, Japan, etc.
- offering of courses in Chinese Culture and Society
- establishment of sister institutions in Asia (Tunghai University, Chinese Culture University, Anhui Normal University, Shanghai Normal University, Zhejiang Medical College, Kaushiung Medical University), Ningbo Institute of Technology, and Shandong Institute of Physical Education and Sports
- collaboration with the University of Indianapolis Press in publishing books with Asian titles
- assisting faculty travel to China and Taiwan
- assisting graduate and undergraduate students trips to China and Taiwan
- assisting in the implementation of the Sino-American project with Ningbo Institute of Technology (the NIT project)
- designing the Music in Art program by collaborating with sister universities and the Indianapolis Opera (i.e., Plaisir d’Amour—Joy of Love Concert)
- designing the Chinese textile exhibit on campus (Chinese children’s hats and baby carriers on display at CDFAC Gallery)
- presenting Art Talk programs in San Francisco, Chicago, and Washington, DC (in collaboration with the art museums in major cities)
- speaking at community events (i.e., Conference on Indiana’s Ethnic Families; Indiana consortium for International Program, Spring Program)
- hosting visiting scholars from sister universities

- Annual lecture series in art and social-political-economic issues, 2007-2012
- Music in Art program (in collaboration with Indianapolis Opera and partners in Asia), March 27, 2008 (Huangshan Encounter—Joyful Gathering in Mt. Huang)
- Social events for Asian students (many of these events are open for students, faculty, and staff), 2007-2012
- Hosting a special art exhibit of modern art works from Taiwan (in collaboration with the Culture Bureau, ROC and the Art Department, UIndy), November 3-December 1, 2007
- Delivering of a keynote speech at an international conference to be held at our sister school in Taipei (Journey with Art Afar—Embracing Lingnan Painting in America), May 22, 2007
- Organizing 2nd Faculty China Familiarization Trip, May 2008
- Organizing 2nd International Symposium on Service-Learning, May 13-15, 2007
- Presentation of Chinese Textile and Symbolism at the National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, March 7, 2008
- Assisting and coordinating with various units to implement the NIT project, 2007-2012
- Strengthening student exchange programs with Tunghai University and Chinese Culture University in Taiwan, 2007-2012
- Assisting the Modern Languages Department to establish Chinese language program, 2007-2012
- Organizing leadership enrichment training programs for Chinese managers and executives, 2007-2012
- Assisting ELSC in recruiting students from Asia, 2007-2012
- Hosting delegations from sister universities, 2007-2012
