Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center

Built in 1994, this center houses both the Department of Music and the Department of Art and Design. The building is dedicated to the development of young artists and performances of those who have succeeded in the arts. Practice rooms dot the building and offer students pianos, sound-reduction, percussion equipment, and–in the top level–a fully furnished studio equipped with both digital and vintage gear. Students are able to develop their craft and then perform–all in the same building. The Christel DeHaan Fine Arts Center hosts over 100 performances each semester.

Ruth Lilly Performance Hall

The Ruth Lilly Performance Hall has hosted thousands of artists and performers since its opening. The performance hall provides an exquisite, Viennese-style space in which a special acoustical design produces high-quality sounds. It has showcased some of the top performers in the world and the recording equipment has enabled students and faculty to publish renowned performances, as well as student recitals. Some of the more renowned performances have included:

Adjacent to the Ruth Lilly Performance Hall, the high ceiling, spacious walls and natural light in the gallery make it ideal for displaying a wide variety of two- and three-dimensional works.

Esch Hall Theatre Spaces

 

Ransburg Auditorium

Located at the east end of Esch Hall, Ransburg Auditorium is the main stage theatre and host for larger-scale theatre productions, as well as many community performances and events. It seats 780 in a traditional proscenium arch configuration and includes fly, wing and backstage space. The backstage facilities include a well-equipped scene shop, costume and prop facilities and ample dressing and make-up rooms.

Studio Theatre

The Studio Theatre is a flexible three-quarter or thrust black-box-style space, seating approximately 80. Located in the lower level of Esch Hall below Ransburg Auditorium, the Studio is used as a classroom, performance space for faculty-directed productions, showcase for acting and directing scenes and space for student-generated performances such as the Student Directed Productions. The studio can be reconfigured into a proscenium set-up, but it's "standard" use is in a thrust configuration. Many Studio productions offer younger and less experienced student actors, designers and technicians the opportunity to "get their feet wet" in a smaller, less formidable space.

Other Facilities

In addition to these venues, you also may find arts and cultural events in the Schwitzer Student Center, home to UIndy's annual dinner theatre production and the Au Ho-nien Museum. The student center features dining and recreation areas for students, conference facilities, a coffee shop and the UIndy bookstore. The park-like Smith Mall, located in the heart of campus, also is home to a handful of events each year. Historic Good Hall, the University's oldest building, holds the Leah Ransburg Gallery, a smaller space for student and faculty exhibitions, and the Recital Hall, which holds a variety of lectures, meetings and events.
